Hundreds of workers rallied in support of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Saturday amid allegations that police illegally wiretapped<\/a> him, while \u200bhundreds of women marched against the president\u2019s policies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pro-Prabowo demonstration \u200cmarked a contrast to recent protests against his administration, part of growing public discontent over his costly populist policies, handling of raging wildfires<\/a> and weakening investor confidence \u200bin Southeast Asia\u2019s biggest economy.<\/p>\n

Labour Party Chairperson Said Iqbal, leading the \u200bworkers\u2019 rally, called for unity to support Prabowo and \u2060said he would mobilise union members against those who threaten the \u200bformer general\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can mobilise members of our organisation across every town, \u200bevery factory,\u201d Said, a special adviser to the president, was quoted as saying by Detik News. \u201cWe are prepared to respond at any moment to maintain order should \u200bany unrest arise, whether instigated by foreign interests or by individuals \u200bseeking to cause trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indonesian police have named four senior police officials as suspects accused \u200cof \u2060attempting to intercept Prabowo\u2019s communications, including a former police chief who is known as a loyalist of former President Joko Widodo.<\/p>\n

The scandal has exposed deepening cracks<\/a> between Prabowo and his predecessor and former backer, known as \u200bJokowi.<\/p>\n

Jokowi has said \u200bhe respected the \u2060legal process. The lawyer for one of the four suspect said his client would cooperate with the \u200binvestigation.<\/p>\n

Also on Saturday, civil society groups held the women\u2019s \u200bmarch in \u2060Jakarta to demand more women\u2019s rights and protest against Prabowo\u2019s handling of the forest fires that have been raging for months, his costly free-meal \u2060programme \u200band a tax on women\u2019s sanitary products.<\/p>\n
