The US\u00a0State Department said \u200bon Friday it has approved a sale worth $151.8 million to Israel for munitions and \u200cmunitions support, without submitting it for congressional review.<\/p>\n

US\u00a0Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined an emergency existed that required an immediate sale to Israel, the State Department said, with the announcement coming a week after the\u00a0US\u00a0and Israel started their \u200battacks on Iran.<\/p>\n

Israel had requested 12,000 BLU-110A\/B general-purpose, 1,000-pound bomb bodies, the State Department \u200bsaid in a statement. The principal contractor will be Repkon USA, located in Texas, \u2060it said.<\/p>\n

The State Department said on Friday that Rubio had determined that the sale is “in the \u200bnational security interests of the United States”.<\/p>\n

Democratic US\u00a0Representative Gregory Meeks said Rubio’s decision to use emergency authority \u200bto bypass congressional review showed a lack of preparation for the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

“The Trump administration has repeatedly insisted it was fully prepared for this war. Rushing to invoke emergency authority to circumvent Congress tells a different story. This \u200bis an emergency of the Trump administration’s own creation,” Meeks said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The US\u00a0and Israel \u200blaunched an air assault on Iran on February 28 and Iran responded with its own attacks in Israel and regional \u200ccountries \u2060with US\u00a0bases.<\/p>\n

In the last week, US\u00a0and Israeli attacks\u00a0have killed\u00a0at least 1,332 Iranian civilians and thousands more have been wounded, according to Iran’s UN\u00a0ambassador. Many top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have also been\u00a0killed.<\/p>\n

The US\u00a0military\u00a0has said\u00a0six US\u00a0service members were killed in a strike \u200bon a Kuwait facility, while \u200bIsrael has said at \u2060least 10 civilians have been killed across Israel so far.<\/p>\n

Washington has maintained strong support for Israel under President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0and former President\u00a0Joe Biden\u00a0during the more \u200bthan two years of Israeli wars in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Trump\u00a0administration \u200bhas also previously \u2060made military sales to Israel by skipping congressional reviews, as did the\u00a0Biden\u00a0administration when it was in power.<\/p>\n

Washington’s military support has faced scrutiny from rights experts, particularly during\u00a0Israel’s assault on Gaza\u00a0that has killed\u00a0tens of thousands, \u2060caused \u200ba hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza’s entire population, and led to \u200bassessments of genocide from\u00a0scholars\u00a0and a\u00a0UN\u00a0inquiry.<\/p>\n
