India and the United States are engaged in constructive talks aimed at reaching a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement, a \u200bforeign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The comments came after a three-day visit \u200cto Washington by an Indian\u00a0trade delegation\u00a0led by senior commerce ministry official Darpan Jain for talks with US\u00a0counterparts.<\/p>\n

“These engagements are ongoing and constructive,” spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a \u200bweekly media briefing.<\/p>\n

“Both sides are working towards a balanced, mutually beneficial and \u200bforward-looking trade agreement, taking into account each other’s concerns and priorities, \u2060and to achieve a trade target of $500 billion by 2030,” he said.<\/p>\n

That target \u200bwould be more than double the bilateral goods and services trade of about $212b\u00a0in \u200b2024.<\/p>\n

The talks reflect a broader effort by New Delhi and Washington to clinch a\u00a0trade pact, even as uncertainty over US\u00a0tariff policy has complicated negotiations.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said \u200bthe two sides had nearly finalised the first tranche of a bilateral trade \u200bagreement and were working through the remaining details, including a mechanism to secure preferential market access \u200cfor \u2060India in the US\u00a0market relative to its competitors.<\/p>\n

No concrete outcome emerged from the latest round of talks, but both sides will continue to engage, a government official said on the condition of anonymity, adding that the Indian delegation was expected to \u200breturn to New \u200bDelhi by early \u2060Friday.<\/p>\n

Efforts to frame an interim trade pact, including a proposal to lower US\u00a0tariffs on Indian goods to about 18%, have \u200bbeen clouded by uncertainty following a US\u00a0Supreme Court ruling,\u00a0although \u200bnegotiations are \u2060continuing.<\/p>\n

Trade analysts and the opposition parties have questioned the government’s plans to sign a deal with Washington after President Donald Trump announced a temporary 10% duty on imports from \u2060all \u200bcountries, including India.<\/p>\n
