{"id":49523,"date":"2026-04-28T18:04:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=49523"},"modified":"2026-04-28T18:04:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:04:33","slug":"us-homeland-security-to-vet-immigrants-for-what-it-calls-extremist-views-raising-free-speech-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=49523","title":{"rendered":"US Homeland \u200bSecurity to vet immigrants for what it calls &#8216;extremist&#8217; views, raising free speech concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The US Department of Homeland \u200bSecurity (DHS) said on Monday that past statements espousing what it labelled extremist views from immigrants applying \u200cfor green cards and naturalisation would &#8220;warrant closer scrutiny&#8221;, causing free speech advocates to raise concerns that it could stifle First Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p>The DHS statement came in response to a weekend report by the New York Times, which cited documents saying that under \u200bnew guidance by President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration, immigrants can now be denied a green card for expressing \u200bpolitical opinions, such as\u00a0participating in pro-Palestinian protests, criticising Israel and desecrating the American flag.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Certain \u2060behaviours and statements may raise serious concerns for USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) personnel reviewing an applicant&#8217;s file, \u200bincluding espousing terrorist ideologies, expressing hatred for American values, advocating for the violent overthrow of the United States \u200bgovernment, or providing material support to terrorist organisations,&#8221; USCIS spokesman Zach Kahler said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such actions warrant closer scrutiny,&#8221; he added. USCIS is a part of DHS.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration includes criticism of Israel as a potentially disqualifying factor, with DHS training materials, citing as \u200ban example of questionable speech a social media post that declares, &#8220;Stop Israeli Terror in Palestine&#8221; and shows the \u200bIsraeli flag crossed out, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration officers were told to weigh those factors as &#8220;overwhelmingly negative&#8221;, it added.<\/p>\n<p>Critics and rights \u200cgroups have \u2060raised free speech and due process concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trump plans to deny legal residency in the US based on whether he agrees with your speech.
