Awam Pakistan Party (APP) leader Miftah Ismail on Saturday criticised government’s economic policies, saying that if the premier had reduced the budget deficit, the interest rate would have fallen into single digits.

Addressing a news conference at Karachi Press Club alongside former MNA Salahuddin, Nasiruddin and others, Miftah said the new federal budget had wasted the nation’s time while further burdening the public.

He argued that the prime minister should have focused on the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, adding that the World Bank reports a significant portion of Pakistan’s population living below the poverty line, with two million young people unable to find jobs every year. He condemned the imposition of taxes even on basic items in the new budget, calling it “shameful.”

Referring to the recent tragic incident in Swat where 18 impoverished individuals drowned, Miftah called it a moment of national reflection. He questioned whether such a tragedy would have occurred if the victims had been affiliated with a political party.
