Once the resignation of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur is accepted, the first agenda item in the upcoming session of the K-P Assembly will be the election of a new Chief Minister.

According to constitutional experts, the Constitution is silent on the specific timeframe for electing a new Chief Minister after a resignation. Under Article 130, the Chief Minister must submit a written resignation to the Governor, while Article 133 empowers the Governor to request the outgoing Chief Minister to continue until a successor is elected.

Sources in the Assembly Secretariat said that following the resignation of the Leader of the House, it is within the Speaker’s authority to summon a session for the election of a new Chief Minister. The current session has been adjourned until October 20, and until a new Leader of the House is elected, no other business can be conducted in the Assembly.

Ali Amin Gandapur assumed office as Chief Minister on March 1, 2024, after being nominated following the general elections. He took oath on March 2 and has served for nearly one year and seven months, making him the fifth K-P Chief Minister to serve less than two years.

In comparison, the shortest-serving Chief Minister was PML-N’s Pir Sabir Shah, who held office for only four months and five days between October 20, 1993, and February 25, 1994.

During his tenure, Gandapur announced plans to reinstate the Sehat Card scheme, withdraw politically motivated cases within six days, and investigate electoral rigging. He repeatedly condemned the May 9 incidents and vowed to secure the release of PTI founder Imran Khan. However, his government faced corruption scandals, and reports of irregularities surfaced in the Public Accounts Committee.

As both Chief Minister and PTI’s provincial president, Gandapur struggled to balance governance with party politics. His relations with the party leadership deteriorated after he presented the 2024–25 provincial budget without Imran Khan’s approval.
