The sequel will once again be directed by Jared Hess, who co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Galletta. Legendary Entertainment is returning as financier and producer, joined by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson and actor-producer Jason Momoa, who starred in the 2025 hit.
The first ‘Minecraft’ film — adapted from Mojang’s globally popular sandbox video game — opened to a record-breaking $163 million domestic debut, ultimately taking $424 million in North America and ranking as 2025’s No 1 domestic film. Worldwide, it became the year’s second-highest-grossing title, proving that video-game adaptations can deliver both critical and commercial success.
Warner Bros. surprised fans with the sequel’s earlier-than-expected release date and a teaser poster featuring two crossed pickaxes, hinting that “another miner” will join the adventure. While plot and casting details remain under wraps, social media has erupted with speculation about new characters and the possible return of Jack Black, who voiced one of the fan-favourite roles in the original.
The film’s release will arrive just weeks after James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’, setting up a packed summer lineup for Warner Bros. in 2027. The studio also reshuffled its slate, moving its animated feature ‘Bad Fairies’ from July to May of that year.
With the ‘Minecraft’ sequel, Warner Bros. aims to cement its foothold in the lucrative gaming-to-cinema market, which continues to expand as studios adapt globally recognised titles into major franchises.
As director Hess put it when discussing the franchise’s potential last year, ‘The Minecraft’ world is infinite – there are always more blocks to build and stories to tell.”
Production details and casting confirmations are expected in the coming months as the studio begins assembling what could be another landmark entry in modern video-game cinema.
