Fraser and Weisz reunite to reawaken ‘The Mummy’

Universal Pictures is reviving ‘The Mummy’ franchise, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz set to reunite for a brand-new sequel directed by the filmmaking duo Radio Silence — Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

The pair, best known for ‘Ready or Not’ and the recent ‘Scream’ instalments, will helm the latest chapter in the beloved action-horror series. The upcoming project is not a reboot but a direct sequel that will ignore the events of the third film, ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’.

The original 1999 hit, directed by Stephen Sommers, grossed over $422 million worldwide, blending action, romance, and supernatural thrills in a 1920s Egyptian setting. Fraser starred as the swashbuckling adventurer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz played the fearless librarian Evelyn Carnahan.

The screenplay is written by David Coggeshall, with Sean Daniel – who produced the original trilogy — returning as producer alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.

Fraser’s career resurgence following his Oscar-winning performance in ‘The Whale’ reportedly reignited Universal’s interest in bringing back ‘The Mummy’. He will next appear in ‘Rental Family’, while Weisz recently starred in Amazon’s ‘Dead Ringers’ and Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’.

Radio Silence is also developing ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’, scheduled for release in April 2026. With their horror-action expertise and the original stars returning, Universal’s new ‘Mummy’ sequel is shaping up to be one of the studio’s most anticipated revivals.

Fraser and Weisz starred in ‘The Mummy’ in 1999 and its 2001 sequel ‘The Mummy Returns’, both directed by Stephen Sommers. The 2008 third instalment, ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, shifted the setting from Egypt to China and followed Rick, Evie and their adult son, Alex.

The role of Evie, originally played by Weisz, was recast with Maria Bello after Weisz had recently given birth and reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s script. Although ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ performed well at the box office, it received mixed reviews.

Universal attempted to revitalise the franchise again in 2017 with ‘The Mummy’ starring Tom Cruise. While the film performed strongly commercially, it was widely panned by critics and audiences alike. As the new project develops, Universal has declined to comment.

Insiders say discussions about a new ‘Mummy’ film began around the time of Fraser’s Oscar win. With this new chapter on the horizon, fans eagerly await further developments as familiar faces and fresh talent prepare to breathe new life into a cherished cinematic universe.
