Judicial Commission declares Ahsan Bhoon’s law degree genuine

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has declared the law degree of commission member and senior lawyer Ahsan Bhoon genuine after verifying his academic credentials, disposing of a complaint filed by Captain (retired) Safdar.

The decision was taken at a JCP meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi on Tuesday, according to sources.

The meeting was also attended for the first time by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah.

Bilawal and Rana Sanaullah were elected JCP members to fill the seats vacated following the resignations of PPP Senator Farooq H. Naek and PML-N’s Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, respectively.

According to sources, the commission discussed objections raised by Safdar over Bhoon’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

The dispute emerged last month when Safdar questioned the authenticity of Bhoon’s degree and approached the JCP for action.

Sources said Chief Justice Afridi had the credentials verified, following which the commission declared the degree genuine and disposed of Safdar’s application.

Following the allegations, Bhoon had also served Safdar with a legal notice seeking Rs5 billion in damages for defamation. The notice demanded an unconditional apology and the withdrawal of the allegations.

According to the notice, Bhoon obtained his LLB degree from the University of the Punjab in March 1989. It also stated that the university had formally verified his academic credentials on January 21, 2026, during the Pakistan Bar Council elections.

Sindh High Court constitutional benches

The JCP also decided to extend the term of constitutional benches of the Sindh High Court by one year, according to sources.

The existing term of the benches is due to expire on October 25.

An official statement detailing the decisions taken at the commission’s meeting is expected to be issued later.
