Rising chicken, fruit prices offset relief from falling vegetable rates in Lahore

As consumers begin to get some relief from vegetable prices, the cost of chicken and fruits has once again started to climb, offsetting the benefits of the overall decline.

After two consecutive weeks of reduction, chicken meat prices rebounded, gaining Rs50 per kilogram within a week. Market observers believe that this upward trend may continue in the coming weeks as production issues among poultry farmers are being resolved, resulting in a gradual recovery in prices.

Meanwhile, fruit prices remained volatile due to cross-border supply constraints. Limited inflows from Iran provided partial relief; however, continued disruptions at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have strained the supply chain, leading to another round of increases in fruit prices across major varieties.

In the poultry market, live chicken prices rose by Rs35 per kg, reaching Rs319 to Rs333 per kg, though actual sales took place at higher rates. Retail chicken meat prices were officially fixed at Rs482 per kg but were sold between Rs540 and Rs630 per kg, while boneless chicken reached Rs750 to Rs850 per kg.

Among vegetables, the price of potato stood between Rs130 and Rs150 per kg, sugar-free potato between Rs100 and Rs120, onion between Rs150 and Rs180, and tomato from Rs150 to Rs220 per kg. Garlic prices showed a mixed pattern, with local garlic selling at Rs300 per kg, Harani garlic at Rs400, and Chinese garlic at Rs600 per kg.

The price of Thai ginger fell by Rs50 to Rs480–500 per kg, while Chinese ginger declined by Rs40, selling between Rs600 and Rs700 per kg. Cucumber (farm) was sold at Rs120 to Rs150 per kg, local cucumber at Rs200, brinjal at Rs80 to Rs100, and bitter gourd at Rs120 to Rs150 per kg.

On the fruit side, prices continued to surge. Apples were sold between Rs250 and Rs600 per kg, bananas from Rs120 to Rs180 per dozen, guava at Rs200 to Rs250 per kg, and dates from Rs800 to Rs2,000 per kg. Grapes (Gola) fetched between Rs700 and Rs800 per kg, Tofi grapes between Rs800 and Rs1,000, and black grapes between Rs1,000 and Rs1,200 per kg. Pomegranate Khandhari was sold between Rs800 and Rs1,200 per kg, while Danedar pomegranate ranged from Rs1,200 to Rs1,400 per kg.

Overall, the week reflected partial relief in vegetable prices due to improved local supply, but the persistent rise in chicken and fruit prices continued to put pressure on consumers’ weekly budgets.
