K-P cabinet to review repeal of ‘Action in Aid of Civil Power Act’

The newly formed Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa cabinet, under Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, is set to hold its first meeting today (Friday) with a 53-point agenda, including critical policy and legislative matters.

Sources told The Express Tribune that that the cabinet will deliberate on a resolution passed by the provincial assembly on September 8, seeking to repeal the Action in Aid of Civil Power Act, a law that grants legal protection to security forces during operations.

The assembly had overwhelmingly approved the resolution to withdraw the Act, and the cabinet is expected to review the matter and decide on its implementation. Additionally, the agenda includes two assembly-approved resolutions: one calling for improved jail facilities for the founding chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and another facilitating a meeting between the Chief Minister and the same party leader.

The cabinet is also scheduled to approve a major initiative aimed at supporting the agricultural sector. Under the plan, farmers will be provided with cows worth approximately Rs2 billion, a move intended to boost livestock farming and enhance rural livelihoods.

In addition to these measures, the agenda initially included the purchase of new vehicles for the Governor. However, following criticism on social media, the matter has reportedly been deferred.

Officials noted that the cabinet meeting comes amid heightened political and public attention on governance and security matters in the province. The government has also emphasized that the assembly resolutions, particularly those related to the Action in Aid of Civil Power Act and the founding party chairman, will be carefully considered before any final decision is made.
