Two teenagers died after a confrontation between fans and police outside the Monumental Stadium in Santiago, Chile, ahead of Colo Colo’s Copa Libertadores group stage match against Fortaleza, officials confirmed.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening after police reportedly blocked about 100 fans from entering the stadium, leading to clashes near the entrance. Local prosecutor Francisco Morales said the victims, aged 13 and 18, were fatally injured when a fence collapsed amid the scuffle.

Authorities are investigating whether a police vehicle was also involved.

“One of the fences crushed these two and an investigation is under way into whether a police car was involved in the death,” Morales said.

Police General Alex Bahamondes confirmed that a police officer had been charged in the case. “Statements are being taken regarding the events,” he said, adding that authorities are reviewing footage and witness accounts.

Despite the initial decision to start the match between Chilean side Colo Colo and Brazilian club Fortaleza, the game was later called off as news of the fatalities emerged.

South American football governing body Conmebol issued a statement expressing its “deepest condolences to their families and loved ones,” and confirmed that “all information regarding the events that occurred inside and outside the stadium” would be reviewed by its disciplinary committee.

The tragedy has sparked renewed concern over fan safety and police conduct at major South American football matches.
