1 dead, 2 injured as magnitude 5.8 quake jolts Gilgit-Baltistan

Strong tremors from a magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted Gilgit, Hunza and Ghizer areas of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) on Monday, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

Shabbir Mir, spokesperson for the GB chief minister, confirmed the death and injured to The Express Tribune.

According to the National Seismic and Tsunami Early Warning Centre, the earthquake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale, had a depth of 10 kilometres, and its epicentre was located in northwestern Kashmir.

However, an official of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the quake occurred at a depth of 35km.

Similarly, the United States Geological Survey website shows the Barishal area as the centre of intensity with a 5.6 magnitude and a depth of 35km.

The quake caused the collapse of several mud houses, while landslides blocked the Karakoram Highway, suspending travel between Pakistan and China.

Severe tremors were also felt across G-B on Monday afternoon.

Damage was reported in Gilgit, Hunza, Nagar and Ghizer. In the Badswat area of Ghizer, one person lost his life and two others sustained injuries.

There were also reports of rocks falling from mountains in Hunza and Nagar. Landslides blocked the Karakoram Highway at the Jaglot–Goro section, resulting in the suspension of traffic between Pakistan and China.

GB Minister for Information Ghulam Abbas told Reuters that several mud houses had either collapsed or been damaged.
He said heavy rocks struck several access roads and a major highway, adding that government agencies had deployed machinery to clear the roads.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority said damage assessments were under way.
