Pakistan, Cambodia advance PTA talks

Pakistan and Cambodia on Wednesday agreed to deepen trade and investment cooperation, including advancing discussions on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), as the two sides concluded the second meeting of the Pakistan–Cambodia Joint Trade Committee (JTC) in Islamabad.

The meeting was co-chaired by Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Cambodia’s Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul. According to an official statement, the session formally adopted its agenda, reviewed outcomes of the Senior Officials’ Meeting, and concluded with the signing of a Joint Statement. An agreement between the Trade Promotion Organisations of the two countries was also witnessed.

In his opening remarks, Kamal Khan referred to the longstanding bilateral relationship, describing the JTC as a formal platform to review progress, address constraints and identify new areas of cooperation. He noted growth in bilateral trade but pointed to untapped potential in market access, investment and sectoral collaboration. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to pursuing a PTA to diversify trade and expand access for exporters.

The meeting reviewed progress since the first JTC held in Phnom Penh on January 21, 2025, where both sides agreed to institutionalise trade dialogue and explore a PTA framework. Building on that foundation, the second session focused on enhancing cooperation in priority sectors. Pakistan highlighted export potential in rice, pharmaceuticals, textiles and agricultural products, while Cambodia identified opportunities in cassava, cashew nuts, footwear and rubber products.
