The long-discussed revival of Karachi’s rail-based transport system gained fresh momentum on Tuesday as Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi agreed on a wide-ranging plan covering the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR), suburban train services, new intercity routes and urban greening initiatives along railway corridors.

The meeting at the Chief Minister’s House reviewed proposals aimed at easing Karachi’s chronic transport crisis through a return to rail-based mass transit, alongside infrastructure upgrades and joint federal-provincial coordination.

Among the key proposals discussed was the revival of suburban rail services in Karachi, which officials described as a “cost-effective and environmentally sustainable” alternative for daily commuters. The participants agreed that the KCR, once restored, would operate in coordination with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems as feeder services.

Sindh Senior Sharjeel Inam Memon said the KCR remains “critical” for the city’s mobility needs and confirmed that the provincial government would develop a mega project for its revival through a public-private partnership model.
