A bomb attack struck a political rally led by a provincial lawmaker from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Quetta on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring five others, police said.

According to Express News, the blast targeted the convoy of MPA Ali Madad Jattak as it moved towards a political gathering on Sariab Road, a busy area in the capital of Balochistan province.

“Unknown assailants targeted the rally with an improvised explosive device. One person died and five others were injured,” a senior police official said. Authorities confirmed that Jatak was unharmed in the attack. A vehicle in the convoy sustained partial damage.

Emergency services transported the injured to a nearby hospital. Police have launched an investigation and collected evidence from the scene.

The Balochistan government condemned the incident. “This was a cowardly act. Attacks on elected representatives are an attack on democracy itself,” said government spokesperson Shahid Rind. He added that a report has been requested and that those responsible will be brought to justice.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
