PSG run riot over Real Madrid to book their place in Club World Cup final

Paris St-Germain delivered a stunning 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup, confirming their place in Sunday’s final against Chelsea.

The match, held at the MetLife Stadium, was all but decided within the opening 24 minutes as PSG dominated from the start. Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a mistake from Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, with the referee allowing play to continue following a foul on Ousmane Dembele by Thibaut Courtois.

Just three minutes later, Dembele capitalised on a mis-kick by Antonio Rudiger to double PSG’s lead.

Ruiz then slotted home a third goal, following a brilliant give-and-go between Achraf Hakimi and Dembele.

The final blow came from Goncalo Ramos, who added a fourth goal to cap PSG’s emphatic performance.

The result sent PSG, who have been in unstoppable form this year, to their fourth potential title of 2025.

With a remarkable 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final and a string of dominant wins over Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, and now Real Madrid, they are well on course to achieve even greater success.

In a side story, Kylian Mbappe, now playing for Real Madrid, watched on as his former club ran riot. The French striker’s move to Madrid has not yielded the same results as PSG, who have clearly improved since his departure a year ago.

In contrast, Real Madrid, who had never previously lost a Club World Cup match, conceded three goals in the opening 25 minutes of a game for the first time since 2003.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid said a bitter farewell to Croatian veteran Luka Modric, who played his final match for the club in the semi-final.

Modric, who has made 597 appearances for Real Madrid and won 28 trophies, will be joining AC Milan for the upcoming season.

“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person,” Modric said in an emotional farewell post on Instagram back in May, when the news of his departure was initially announced.

The 39-year-old midfielder was a key figure in Real Madrid’s success over the past decade, winning six Champions League titles and four domestic championships since his arrival from Tottenham in 2012.

Despite his personal achievements, the defeat against PSG marks a disappointing end to his illustrious career at Madrid.

Real Madrid will now turn their attention to La Liga, with their first match of the season scheduled against Osasuna on 19 August. However, they are reportedly seeking to postpone the game to allow for a longer rest.
