The family of deceased model and actor Humaira Asghar Ali agreed to claim her body on Thursday, shortly after Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori announced that he would bear the costs of her funeral and burial.

Ali was found dead earlier this week in her apartment in DHA Phase 6, Karachi, when police and her landlord arrived to evict her over non-payment of rent.

In a statement, the governor said the late actor was “not abandoned or alone” and offered to take full responsibility for her final rites. “Like all citizens of Sindh, Humaira Asghar was also my sister. If her relatives do not wish to participate in the funeral, I will ensure all arrangements are made,” he stated.

He added that funeral prayers would be held at the Governor House, and a local imam had been directed to lead them, adding that he had tasked his team with making all arrangements.

“This is not just about one individual,” the governor remarked. “It’s a reflection on us as a society when a young woman’s body remains unclaimed. We must uphold the dignity of our mothers, sisters, and daughters.”

Earlier, Sindh Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah also offered to arrange the burial, stating that the provincial government would step in as legal heir if the family refused to come forward.

Following the governor’s announcement, Ali’s family agreed to claim her body. According to Express News, her brother and brother-in-law arrived in Karachi and met with SSP South and other police officials.

Authorities confirmed that a formal handover order would be issued once the necessary documentation was completed.

Initially, the actor’s father had declined to accept the body, citing an estrangement that began two years ago. Her brother-in-law had later contacted police to take custody, but officials withheld the body, stating that only a direct blood relative could receive it.

Ali, 35, was discovered deceased after months of no public appearances. Her body was found in a decomposed state, locked inside her apartment, after her landlord and police arrived to evict her over unpaid rent.

According to Police Surgeon Dr Summaya Syed, the postmortem has been delayed pending chemical analysis.

Investigators recovered two mobile phones from the scene, which have been sent for forensic examination. They are also probing the existence of a possible third phone, as no digital activity has been traced after October 2024. Authorities have found no suspicious CCTV footage from the building.
