Municipal staff face salary standoff

The provincial government has failed to release the required funds to the Peshawar metropolitan government, leaving employees without salaries and pensions despite an allocation of Rs150 million. In response, workers have decided to once again take to the streets.

A meeting of the United Municipal Workers Union Peshawar, chaired by Chairman Malik Muhammad Naveed Awan, reviewed the worsening situation.

Union leaders said the provincial government and the Local Government Department were directly responsible for pushing municipal institutions into financial crisis.

They pointed out that the property transfer fee had been reduced from 2% to 1%, while 120 municipal taxes suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic have yet to be reinstated.

The government has also refrained from increasing property rents to secure traders’ support, and octroi share payments are being made at nominal rates instead of under the agreed formula. Moreover, the Excise and Taxation Department has shown no willingness to conduct an audit of UIP tax collections.

The union further said employees have not received their arrears for July.
