PSL 11 — “Super 6” proposal fails to gain support

The proposal for a “Super 6” round in PSL 11 has failed to gain support, as stakeholders fear that eliminating two teams after the initial round could reduce public interest.

The event will feature 35 to 44 matches, and each team will play at least once against every other side in the initial stage.

According to details, a key meeting between PSL officials and franchise owners/representatives was held yesterday. Team officials attended via video call.

Surprisingly, Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen, who has recently been in the media spotlight for his bold statements, did not attend personally, though his representative were present.

Sources said that the tournament format was discussed in detail. Because of the World Cup schedule, next year’s PSL will also not be held during its traditional window.

It has already been decided to stage the event in April–May. The PCB shared several format proposals, which will be reviewed further.

Keeping the current format is not feasible, as 60 matches would make the tournament last for about two months.

Under the new proposed structure, each team will play at least one match against every other side in the league round, while their additional one or two matches will be decided later.

Between 35 and 44 matches are expected in total.

Officials proposed a “Super 6” stage similar to ICC events, where two teams would be eliminated after the initial round.

However, the franchises opposed the idea, arguing that since the league represents city-based teams, removing two sides early would hurt fan engagement.

PCB officials informed participants that an audit firm would soon inform each franchise of its updated valuation within this week. Any concerns could be raised either with the firm or directly with the board.

“Are we among the eligible teams?” — Multan Sultans official

During the meeting, a representative of Multan Sultans asked, “The PCB keeps referring to eligible franchises—does that include us?”

In response, PSL Head Salman Naseer said, “I will speak with you separately after this meeting.”

“Help recover outstanding dues,” PCB urges franchises

Usman Wahla rejoins PSL operations; attends meeting

During the meeting, PCB officials also requested franchises to help in recovering outstanding payments from various stakeholders, as the board is still waiting for several dues to be cleared.

Meanwhile, former Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla has rejoined the PSL setup and attended the meeting. Franchises were formally informed that two new teams will be added in the 11th edition of the tournament, though further details were not discussed.

Player retention matters were also part of the meeting agenda.
