Former U.S. President Barack Obama made an unexpectedly candid remark about his marriage to Michelle Obama during a recent appearance at Hamilton College.

Speaking with President Steven Tepper, Obama admitted, “I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” referencing the toll that his presidency and public responsibilities took on their relationship.

“So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” the 63-year-old added, as reported by The Daily Beast. The comment has reignited interest in the couple’s relationship, especially as they continue to face scrutiny and rumours of marital tension.

Obama has long acknowledged the strain his two terms in the White House placed on his personal life. In a 2023 interview, he noted, “It sure helps to be out of the White House and to have a little more time with her,” praising Michelle’s resilience and forgiving nature.

Michelle has also spoken openly about the complexities of their marriage. In 2022, she revealed, “I couldn’t stand my husband for a decade,” adding that the imbalance of parenting during their daughters’ early years strained their bond. “Marriage isn’t 50/50 — ever, ever,” she explained, emphasising the importance of enduring the hard years.

Despite recurring divorce rumours — which gained traction after Barack appeared solo at several events — sources close to the couple say they are still committed. “They don’t pretend that they have this Camelot relationship,” one insider told Page Six. “They’re not trying to present that they’re this magical couple.”

The Obamas, married since 1992, continue to serve as a public example of navigating partnership under the spotlight.
