Sindh CM okays Rs25b for repair, reconstruction of Karachi roads

Karachi’s rain battered roads are set to undergo a major overhaul as Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved Rs25 billion for the repair and fresh carpeting. The city administration has selected 315 internal streets and reconstruction of 60 major arteties.

Chairing a meeting at the CM House on Monday, he stressed that work must begin immediately to address chronic traffic congestion and deteriorating infrastructure. During the meeting, it was highlighted that ongoing projects, including the Korangi Causeway Bridge, Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway, and Kareemabad Underpass, with several stretches are expected to open within the next few months.

The CM was informed that 315 inner streets in various areas of Karachi are in urgent need of repair. He approved all the projects and directed the authorities to start the work without delay. He highlighted the importance of integrating proper drainage and sewerage systems with street reconstruction to prevent recurring damage during monsoon seasons.

Reconstruction of major roads

The city’s 60 major roads are slated for redevelopment, with an estimated cost of Rs25 billion. CM Murad instructed that these projects be executed systematically, ensuring that construction of roads and streets is coordinated with related utility work to maximise efficiency and long-term benefits.

The new Korangi Causeway Bridge, replacing the old one prone to frequent flooding, is over 80 per cent complete. It is expected to be completed by December 2025 or January 2026. It will provide flood-proof connectivity between Korangi’s industrial and residential areas, resolving a long-standing traffic problem in the city.

The 39-kilometre Shahrah-e-Bhutto, a controlled-access dual carriageway linking DHA and Korangi to the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9), is approximately 78 per cent complete.

Sections between Qayyumabad and Quaidabad are already functional, and other segments, including the stretch connecting to M-9, are progressing at a faster pace. This expressway aims to significantly reduce travel time for commuters.

A 22-kilometre link road between Port Qasim and the M-9 Motorway is being developed to facilitate cargo traffic and is expected to open by the end of 2025. Meanwhile, the long-delayed Kareemabad Underpass, now 85 per cent complete, is also slated for completion by the end of the year, providing smoother traffic flow in the area.

BRT Red Line

Construction on the BRT Red Line has resumed after previous delays, with the new completion target set for the end of 2026. CM Murad also lauded the recent installation of Reverse Osmosis plants in Keamari and credited the Safe City project with reducing traffic accidents. These initiatives, he said, reflect the provincial government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and public safety.

Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Shah briefed the CM on additional progress in key projects, including Korangi Causeway Bridge and Shahrah-e-Bhutto, confirming that portions of both projects would open to traffic within the next two months.
