Trump congratulates Democrats on midterm wins
US President Donald Trump has congratulated Democrats on their strong performance in the midterm elections but dismissed suggestions that the Republican losses reflect public dissatisfaction with his leadership or policies.
Speaking in a phone interview with Fox News, Trump acknowledged the Democrats’ efforts, saying they had campaigned hard and deserved recognition for their victories.
“The Democrats did a good job. They fought hard,” he said.
Several Republican candidates endorsed by Trump suffered defeats, including in states he had comfortably won during the 2024 presidential election.
However, the president brushed aside suggestions that the results were a setback for his administration, instead pointing to the candidates themselves as responsible for their losses.
Trump also rejected the idea that voter concerns over issues such as the economy and the war involving Iran had contributed to the Republican losses.
Asked whether he viewed the election outcome as a reflection on his presidency, Trump said he did not believe it was a personal blow.
“I don’t view it as a hit on me,” he said, adding that his administration had delivered what he described as “the greatest two years in the history of the presidency.”
