ECP sets February 7, 2027, for first phase of Punjab local body polls
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday decided to hold local government elections in Punjab in phases, fixing February 7, 2027, as the date for polling in the first phase.
According to a short order issued by the commission, the decision was taken in response to a request from the provincial government and in view of administrative facilities to ensure that the electoral process is conducted transparently and in an organised manner.
The order said the Punjab chief secretary had informed the commission that consultations between a provincial government committee and the ECP had resulted in an understanding to hold the elections between December 2026 and January 2027.
The chief secretary had requested that polling be scheduled preferably after January 20, 2027, taking into account weather conditions and administrative considerations. He had also proposed holding the elections in multiple phases.
The ECP said conducting free, fair and transparent elections in accordance with the Constitution and law, while ensuring a level playing field for all candidates, was its fundamental constitutional responsibility.
Accepting the chief secretary’s request, the commission directed that the first phase of polling be held on February 7, 2027.
The schedule and other details for subsequent phases will be announced later.
