Terming adherence to fundamental rights a cornerstone of any democratic society, Chief Justice of Pakistan has stressed that the fundamental rights must be upheld across the board.

The CJP expressed these views during a meeting with Supreme Court Bar Association President Mian Muhammad Rauf Ata.

According to an SCBA press release, the bar chief apprised the CJP of the ongoing situation in Balochistan, where fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution have effectively ceased to exist. This state of affairs has further deteriorated law and order situation in the province, leading to widespread unrest, a rise in insurgent activities, and road closures that have directly impacted the daily lives of ordinary citizens.

The SCBA president also shared with CJP the details of consultative meetings aimed at building a broad-based national consensus on Balochistan’s issues. He noted that, in general, the majority of the political elite agree that resolution of these issues lies in a democratic approach.
