Trump claims Paris is going to be a Muslim city very soon
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Paris will become a “Muslim city very soon” as he blamed immigration for unrest in France and urged the country to close its borders.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said he had warned French President Emmanuel Macron that allowing people from around the world to enter France was a mistake.
“Paris is going to be a Muslim city very soon, and that wasn’t the deal,” Trump said, adding that he had advised Macron to close France’s borders.
“We closed our borders. He didn’t,” the US president said, arguing that European governments had failed to protect their borders and were now facing the consequences of their immigration policies.
Trump’s remarks came as France announced partial curfews in Paris and other cities on Monday after weekend demonstrations over rising prices escalated into some of the worst street violence in recent years.
However, the unrest has not been established as being caused by immigration.
The protests began with student demonstrations over school conditions before expanding into broader public anger over the cost of living, inequality and declining public services.
Some demonstrations later descended into looting and arson.
