Police said the victims were identified as Tahira Khatoon and Rabia Bibi, teachers at Government Girls High School 35-M.
Tahira Bibi was a resident of Lodhran, while Rabia Bibi hailed from Bahawalpur. They were travelling in a rickshaw along with another female colleague when a speeding trailer rammed into the rickshaw from behind at Latsaka Super Chowk.
As a result of the impact, the women were thrown onto the road and crushed under the trailer.
Tahira Khatoon and Rabia Bibi died on the spot, while a third teacher sustained minor injuries and was shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, eyewitness, teacher Sofia Khaliq, stated that a speeding vehicle hit the rickshaw, causing two teachers to fall.
“A fast-moving trailer then ran over them from behind, and they died on the spot,” she said.
City Police Lodhran registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
The accident sparked reactions from local civic and trader representatives, including former Anjuman-e-Tajran president Rao Ehsanul Haq and advocate Chaudhry Shahzad Qaiser, who expressed grief and anger over what they termed “routine deadly accidents” at Latsaka Super Chowk and Bahawalpur Super Chowk.
Qaiser pointed out that dozens of people lose their lives every year at these intersections due to speeding, traffic rule violations, and the prolonged delay in completing the Bahawalpur Super Chowk flyover project, which was launched in 2019 but remains incomplete.
He urged the Punjab government to immediately resume and complete the project to prevent further loss of life.
Until construction resumes, they demanded the deployment of dedicated traffic police personnel, installation of online monitoring cameras and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
They also called on Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif to formulate a financial assistance policy for families of teachers and other citizens who die in road accidents, to ensure the welfare of their children.
