Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Friday called for strict accountability in the construction sector, stressing that responsibility for building safety lies not only with the government but also with engineers, builders, and civil society. Speaking at a conference organized by the Association of Consulting Engineers Pakistan at a local hotel, Memon said Pakistan’s discourse has become dominated by politics while critical issues like construction safety are ignored. “Our conversations are reduced to accusations, but today we are discussing a matter that affects every citizen’s life and work,” he remarked.
Referring to the Gul Plaza fire, which claimed 80 lives, Memon noted that the building owner had illegally added floors and failed to follow approved plans. He said soil testing and compliance with construction laws are mandatory but often neglected, leading to structural flaws such as seepage and water leakage. He urged engineering colleges to strengthen professional training and standards.
In media remarks, Memon prayed for Imran Khan’s health, criticized political marches that block major roads like Sharae Faisal, and said the government will not allow closures that disrupt public life. He added that Sindh announces relief packages every Ramazan.
