SHC halts termination of 55 Covid-era vaccinators

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday restrained the provincial government from terminating the services of 55 vaccinators appointed during the Covid-19 pandemic and issued notices to concerned officials, including the chief secretary and health secretary.

The SHC bench issued the restraining order on a petition filed by the affected vaccinators through their counsel, Nawaz Daryai Advocate. He submitted before the court that his clients were recruited by the Sindh government during the Covid outbreak.

Currently, the vaccinators are serving under the Mother and Child Vaccination Programme of the Health Department. However, the government issued a notification on December 4 stating that December 28 would be their last working day.

Accepting the plea, the court restrained the provincial government from dismissing the vaccinators and sought replies from the respondents by January 14.

Meanwhile, a separate SHC bench disposed of a petition seeking action against those responsible for lynching and burning alive a suspected robber in Orangi Town.

During the hearing, the PS Orangi Town SHO informed the court that an FIR had been registered under murder provisions on the complaint of Gul Muhammad and that four suspects had been arrested for their alleged involvement. Counsel for the petitioner underscored the need for public awareness to prevent such acts of mob violence.

The Sindh government’s law officer told the bench that police had assured the authorities that such incidents would not recur and that awareness campaigns would be launched through the legal and justice system. He added that an impartial investigation was under way and that those found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The court directed the police to take effective measures. Expressing satisfaction with the police report, the petitioner’s counsel raised no further objections, following which the bench disposed of the petition.

According to the petition, on December 1, unidentified persons tied 35-year-old Abdul Hanan to a pole and set him on fire after accusing him of robbery, while the police initially failed to take timely action.
