Final day of Basant in Lahore promises good kite-flying conditions

Lahore celebrates the third and final day of Basant on Sunday, with good winds expected for kite flying in the afternoon.

Lahore remains on a public holiday as Basant enters its concluding hours. The festival, officially resumed after 25 years under government supervision, has already completed nearly 56 hours of the permitted 72-hour duration. Only about 16 hours remain for kite flying before the event concludes.

After nearly two decades, Basant returned to Lahore this week, cautiously and conditionally. It is a good feeling to have a spring festival back, even in a limited form. Basant is tied to the culture, tradition, history and soul of Lahore, where it has long been celebrated.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Lahore is experiencing mild and pleasant weather, with the current temperature at 12°C and a maximum of 25°C expected. Minimum temperature is recorded at 11°C.

Winds are currently blowing at 8 km/h, slightly below the recommended 10–15 km/h for optimal kite flying. PMD forecasts wind speeds to increase to 12 km/h between 12:00pm and 5:00pm, providing suitable conditions for kite enthusiasts.

The first day of Basant saw minimal winds, limiting kite-flying activities, while the second day experienced stronger breezes, allowing participants to fully enjoy the festival.

Authorities have continued strict monitoring of the event, including Safe City cameras, thermal drones, and other surveillance systems. Over 10,000 police personnel, 2,500 traffic wardens, and 1,200 rescue staff are deployed for security and emergency response.
