The United States has issued a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Indian illegal Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), citing heightened security threats and the risk of further violence following a deadly attack in the region. “The security situation remains dangerous,” the US Department of State said.
The advisory was released after a terrorist assault on April 22 in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, where gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists. At least 26 people were killed and several others injured.
In an alert issued through the US Embassy in New Delhi, American citizens currently in IIOJK were urged to remain vigilant and reconsider any non-essential travel.
“Due to the potential for armed conflict, US citizens should avoid travelling within 10 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border,” the advisory stated. The advisory excludeD the eastern region of Ladakh and its capital, Leh, where security conditions are considered more stable.
