Elderly couple returning from Canada found murdered in Karachi home

An elderly couple who had recently returned to Karachi from Canada were found murdered inside their locked home in North Karachi, prompting police to register a case against unidentified suspects and launch an investigation.

The case was registered at the Sir Syed police station on the complaint of Muhammad Anwar, brother of the deceased Muhammad Yamin, under murder-related provisions of the law.

According to the complainant, Yamin and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, had returned to Karachi from Canada some time ago. They had their house in North Karachi vacated by Yamin’s sister, Parveen, and started renovation work on the property.

Anwar said he received a telephone call from Rizwan, his sister-in-law’s brother, informing him that the house door would not open.

He went to the house but left when no one responded from inside.

Later in the evening, the door was opened with a duplicate key, and the couple’s bloodied bodies were found in the television lounge. Police emergency service 15 was subsequently informed.

The bodies were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where post-mortem examinations were completed.

Initial findings showed severe injuries to both victims’ heads, raising suspicion that they had been struck with a heavy object.

Police said there were no clear signs of robbery or theft at the house. Investigators have also yet to obtain information about the labourers involved in the renovation work.

Police are questioning people who gather in the surrounding area to seek daily-wage work as part of efforts to establish the circumstances of the killings and identify those responsible.

The couple were parents of three children.
