Trump renames AI as ‘super intelligence’

US President Donald Trump has ordered the federal government to replace the terms “artificial intelligence” and “AI” with “super intelligence” and “SI” in official executive branch communications.

Under an executive order signed on Tuesday, federal departments and agencies have been directed to use “super intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents and other non-statutory materials, while discontinuing use of “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in those documents.

The order also tasks the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology with developing a proposed federal definition of “super intelligence” and “SI” that reflects the “continuously advancing technological frontier.”

The official has further been directed to identify any additional executive actions required to implement the proposed definition.

The White House said the terminology change is intended to reflect the “immense opportunity” presented by emerging technologies.

The Trump administration said the United States is the world leader in super intelligence and should use terminology that reflects the capabilities and potential of technologies under development.

It also described the US as the birthplace of artificial intelligence, saying the country has led the development and deployment of the technology for more than 70 years since AI emerged as a field of research.
