Govt, opposition to hold another round of talks today

The government and opposition are set to hold another round of talks at Parliament House today, with both sides maintaining their positions and a final decision expected from the meeting.

The talks are scheduled for around 2.30pm in the conference hall of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s chamber.

The two sides had agreed to continue negotiations during their previous meeting, which saw heated exchanges and a tense atmosphere.

In the previous meeting, the government demanded that the opposition postpone or call off its long march, making clear that it would not offer concessions in response to protests or disorder.

It made it clear that any concessions would require the opposition to demonstrate seriousness and ruled out allowing an advance on Islamabad.

The opposition, meanwhile, maintained its demands for a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan in jail and his transfer to a hospital in line with a court verdict.

The government has reportedly assured the opposition that the court decision would be implemented.

However, the government side made it clear that if the opposition continued with its rigid stance, the government could invoke Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq intervened during the previous meeting to ease tensions and create a conducive environment for the negotiations.
