Punjab imposes Section 144 for 10 days amid security threats

The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from October 6 to 15, banning gatherings of five or more people at public places, roads and open spaces amid reports of security threats.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, rallies, processions and other gatherings involving five or more people will be prohibited during the 10-day period.

The carrying and display of all types of weapons at public places will also be banned, while encouraging or facilitating participation in illegal gatherings will be prohibited.

The restrictions will not apply to weddings, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship.

Similarly, courts, government institutions and officially authorised events will also be exempt.

Law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies and security personnel performing their duties will remain exempt from the restrictions.

The Home Department said intelligence agencies had reported immediate security threats, including the possibility that terrorist groups could target public gatherings.

It said rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions and protests could become potential soft targets.

The department said the restrictions had been imposed in view of serious threats to public order and the safety of life and property.
