Ronaldo handed 30-day ban for walking out on Portugal camp
The Portuguese Football Federation handed Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a €255 ($285) fine for walking out of the national team camp, describing the punishment as “adequate and sufficient”.
The federation said on Monday that the 40-year-old forward fully admitted the facts underlying the charges in a formal statement submitted on Friday.
His admission and clean disciplinary record were taken into account as mitigating circumstances, reducing the punishment.
The fine was the maximum permitted under the federation’s rules after those circumstances were considered.
Ronaldo can appeal the suspension but had previously apologised for his actions and said he expected to be punished.
He had not immediately commented publicly on the sanction.
The incident occurred during Portugal’s recent Nations League campaign.
Ronaldo played in the opening win over Wales but was an unused substitute in the team’s victory over Norway on September 27.
He accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking an agreement to play him before leaving the camp.
Portugal went on to beat Denmark and Norway again without him, securing qualification for the quarter-finals.
The suspension took effect on October 1, the day Portugal played Denmark.
Ronaldo has already served 19 days of the ban and is expected to be available for Portugal’s next Nations League match against Denmark on November 14.
