Proposed wheat price set at Rs4,500 per maund for 2027
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set the proposed wheat price for 2027 at Rs4,500 per maund, an increase of Rs1,000 from the Rs3,500 rate set last year.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the decision aims to promote agriculture, protect farmers’ economic interests and encourage higher wheat production in the coming year.
The government expects the proposed price to help farmers cope with rising production costs, higher fuel prices and inflationary pressures, while providing them with an incentive to cultivate wheat.
PM Shehbaz said the increase was intended to help farmers recover their production costs and earn a reasonable profit.
Farmers have faced financial difficulties in recent years due to inflation and rising agricultural expenses, while Pakistan has had to import wheat over the past two years, according to the statement.
The prime minister thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her cooperation and valuable suggestions during consultations on the decision. He also expressed gratitude to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for his support.
PM Shehbaz said the proposed price was an important step towards strengthening national food security, encouraging domestic production and stabilising the agricultural sector.
The government expects the proposed rate to encourage farmers to allocate more land to wheat cultivation, potentially leading to increased sowing and higher domestic output in the next season.
The move is also aimed at improving farmers’ financial well-being, supporting the agricultural economy and reducing the country’s reliance on imported wheat.
