Kiker, who became known as “The Singing Garbage Man,” gained national recognition during the 18th season of American Idol. His emotional performance of Rascal Flatts’ “God Bless This Broken Road” moved judge Katy Perry to tears, with Lionel Richie also praising him for his raw talent.

Despite being eliminated, Kiker returned for the season finale, delivering a virtual performance of the same song that had captivated audiences.

Though Kiker’s time on the show was brief, his powerful voice left a lasting impression. He was described by family members as someone who had “the biggest smile” and knew how to bring laughter to those around him.

In addition to his musical career, Kiker faced legal troubles months later, being arrested and charged with domestic violence, which garnered media attention.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by his sister to assist with funeral expenses, with heartfelt messages from loved ones describing Doug as a sincere, humorous soul who will be greatly missed.

Doug is survived by two children, whom he shared with his ex-fiancée, Valerie Cook.
