Trump says Iran has ‘virtually given up’ plans for nuclear weapon
US President Donald Trump said that Iran had “virtually given up” plans to develop a nuclear weapon, one of his administration’s key objectives in its eight-month war with Tehran.
Trump also said oil prices were falling after remaining elevated since Israel and the United States launched strikes against Iran on February 28, Anadolu said in a report.
“Oil is coming down. Oil is right now lower, and it’s been lower than it was under the Biden administration,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a rally in Ohio.
He added that Iran had “virtually given up any plans of a nuclear weapon”.
Iran has long denied US and Israeli allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that position during his visit to New York last month for the UN General Assembly.
Pezeshkian said Iran was not seeking nuclear weapons because they were prohibited under religious doctrine, and offered to dilute its enriched uranium stockpiles under international verification.
Tehran has maintained, however, that it will not compromise on its civilian nuclear programme or make structural concessions unless Washington lifts economic sanctions.
