On April 1, Lionsgate confirmed that John Wick: Chapter 5 is officially in the works, with Keanu Reeves set to reprise his iconic role as the unstoppable hitman.
The announcement really surprised fans of the franchise with some thinking the announcement was an April Fools’ joke!
He will be joined once again by director Chad Stahelski, producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, all returning to continue the thrilling world of John Wick.
Although the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4 seemed to suggest that the legendary hitman might be dead, director Stahelski has clarified that the conclusion was intentionally left ambiguous, fueling speculation about the upcoming film’s direction.

The idea of Chapter 5 has been in the works since 2020, but Reeves, now 60, hesitated to return due to concerns over the physical demands of the role.
“My knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,’” Reeves confessed in December 2024. Still, it seems his passion for the character and the story outweighed the physical challenges.
As for the plot, Lionsgate is keeping details under wraps, but producer Basil Iwanyk hinted in November 2023 that Chapter 5 might feature a significant time jump, setting it apart from the immediate aftermath of Chapter 4.
The cast remains largely unknown, though it’s a safe bet that Keanu Reeves will once again lead the charge as John Wick.
Director Stahelski has expressed his unwavering confidence in Reeves’ portrayal of the character, stating that there’s truly no other actor who could embody Wick’s emotional and physical journey.
Stahelski, who has helmed all four previous John Wick films, is also deeply involved in the expanding John Wick universe, including producing the upcoming Ballerina film starring Ana de Armas, as well as an animated prequel set to be released in 2025.
