Celine Dion revives iconic 1997 oscars look in chanel gown
Celine Dion has revisited one of her most memorable red-carpet looks, wearing a custom Chanel gown inspired by the dress she wore to the 1997 Academy Awards during her Paris residency.
The singer debuted the shimmering silver-and-blue creation on Wednesday, October 14, at her third-to-last show of the five-week concert run at La Défense Arena.
Designed by Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy, the gown features a corseted bodice, sculpted hips and a thigh-high slit.
The fashion house said its ateliers in Paris handcrafted the dress, with specialised embroidery by Atelier Montex.
According to Vogue, the gown took more than 1,380 hours to make and features 6,000 jewels and 5,000 beads.
Dion completed the look with a silver shooting-star necklace inspired by the jewellery she wore at the 1997 Oscars, where her Chanel couture dress became a memorable fashion moment.
Sharing the inspiration behind the outfit on Instagram, Dion said the new design was not a replica but a fresh interpretation of her original red-carpet look that brought back memories of the ceremony.
The 1997 Oscars also marked a milestone in her music career, as she performed twice during the ceremony, singing “Because You Loved Me” and covering Barbra Streisand’s “I Finally Found Someone”.
Dion’s Paris residency marks a significant chapter in her return to live performances following her 2022 diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome.
She performed at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in 2024 before returning to the stage for other high-profile appearances.
