Saudi Arabia intercepts Houthi drone, ballistic missiles
Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted and destroyed a drone over the Riyadh region early Sunday, following a series of missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militia.
On Saturday, the coalition reported intercepting two ballistic missiles launched toward Saudi cities, including Taif and Yanbu.
Debris from the interceptions fell at several locations in western Saudi Arabia, including Wadi Al Mughammas, about 20 kilometres from the holy city of Makkah’s Grand Mosque, as well as parts of Jeddah, Taif and Rabigh.
No casualties or significant damage were reported in the statements.
The Houthis have claimed attacks targeting Saudi airports, oil facilities and military installations, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, describing the strikes as retaliation for Saudi air raids in Yemen.
The coalition also reported intercepting a drone over the Eastern Province.
The latest incidents mark an escalation in cross-border hostilities, raising concerns over threats to civilian infrastructure and holy sites.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthis since 2015, while the group has controlled Sanaa and other parts of Yemen since 2014.
