Yemeni army carries out six air strikes on Houthi positions in Taiz

The Yemeni army said on Thursday that its warplanes carried out six air strikes on Houthi positions in Taiz province as fighting intensified on several fronts in southwestern Yemen.

In a statement, the army said the strikes targeted the Al Akboush area and Hayfan district, southeast of Taiz.

It said government forces were also engaged in fierce clashes with Houthi fighters in Bani Bakari in Jabal Habashi district and Himyar in Maqbanah district in western Taiz, as well as along the Al-Aqroud front southeast of the province.

The army said the fighting caused casualties and equipment losses among the Houthis but did not provide specific figures.

The latest escalation comes amid intensified clashes between government forces and the Houthis across several fronts in Yemen.

On Wednesday, the army said its forces had carried out 468 operations against Houthi fighters and military equipment on three fronts in central and southwestern Yemen, claiming that hundreds of rebels had been killed or wounded.

The Houthis did not immediately comment on the claims.

The fighting is part of a military escalation that began in early July, which the Yemeni army has described as the largest since a period of relative calm that followed an April 2022 truce.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government.
