Field Marshal arrives in Tehran for talks
Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Tuesday at the head of a high-level Pakistani delegation to meet senior Iranian officials, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed the visit earlier during his weekly press conference, saying the talks would relate to ongoing negotiations but would focus mainly on bilateral relations and strengthening cooperation.
According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Field Marshal Asim Munir is scheduled to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the visit.
Discussions are expected to cover Pakistan-Iran relations, regional developments, diplomatic initiatives to ease tensions and broader international issues.
The visit comes as Pakistan plays an active role in diplomatic engagement and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran amid regional tensions.
Reuters had earlier reported, citing a Pakistani official and Iranian media, that Field Marshal Asim Munir was scheduled to visit Tehran.
According to Reuters, Field Marshal Asim Munir held talks with Iranian leaders earlier this summer as part of efforts to prevent further escalation, facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and bring the ongoing conflict to an early end.
The latest visit is expected to provide an opportunity to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions alongside matters of mutual interest between Pakistan and Iran.
