Iraq sets June 30, 2027 deadline for militia disarmament

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi said on Thursday that his government would address weapons held outside state control under a clear roadmap, with the process scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2027.

In a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency, Zaidi said the process would follow “a clear roadmap and agreed timelines” and uphold the constitutional principle that decisions on war and peace rest with the country’s constitutional authorities.

The roadmap would also prohibit military action carried out outside the authority of the state, he said.

Zaidi added that the government would work to fully disarm all non-Iraqi armed groups operating on Iraqi territory.

“We congratulate the Iraqi people on this great day, October 1, 2026, and the major national achievement of ending the international coalition’s mission in Iraq,” he said.
