Trump says US still has one or two targets to strike in Iran

US President Donald Trump has said American forces have severely weakened Iran’s military capabilities but still need to deal with one or two remaining targets, including a suspected underground nuclear facility known as Pickaxe Mountain.

Trump said negotiations with Iran to end the war, launched by the US and Israel in late February, were progressing, although he questioned Tehran’s reliability.

“We’ve knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes,” Trump told reporters at his Florida residence on Saturday.

Referring to the suspected underground nuclear complex, he added that Pickaxe Mountain was among the sites that still needed to be dealt with, saying the US could act against the targets quickly.

“You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, and you have to take care of that. We can do that all very quickly,” he added, referring to a suspected underground nuclear complex.

Iran has denied conducting any nuclear activities at the site.

Trump reiterated that Washington was in no hurry to launch further offensive operations, arguing that US strikes had already decimated Iran’s military and nuclear programme.

Earlier on Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had not made a decision on fresh strikes against Iran, adding that Washington remained open to a diplomatic solution.

Meanwhile, Iran’s supreme leader warned the United States and Israel against launching further attacks, following threats of renewed military action after the US midterm elections.

Trump has previously indicated that he was weighing further military action after the elections, saying he was considering whether to “finish them off”.
